Me: What's up?
Kim: I have to sew a kid's ear back on.
Me: Can't somebody else do that.
Kim: No. Then I have to check on the kid from this morning with the subdural (head bleed).

Kim's awesome! I don't think you can fault him for being late for that reason.
Here's mine-
"Um, my water just broke, so instead of having a meeting with you right now, I'm going to the hospital to see if my friend Leigh can deliver my second child. Can we reschedule?"

Wes is late because he's in Afghanistan!
I guess Wes's primary reasons for being late usually deal with dumb pointless Army meetings... or delivering babies... or some other kind of retarded Army drama.
I find none of these excuses acceptable.
P.S. Kim rocks. I know you are so proud of him. I remember a night at Carolina when we had all gone to a football game together, and some guy either fell or had chest pain... something, I can't remember exactly what the situation was. But I remember Kim. He knew exactly what to do, and he took charge of the situation without a second's hesitation. I remember thinking to myself what a wonderful doctor Kim was going to be someday. I've ALWAYS been impressed by his passion, knowledge, skill, and dedication. You've got yourself a keeper, friend!
So, how did the kid's ear get off?
Jeff has had a couple. One, he was headed home after his shift and was almost hit head on by a Wake Forest grad student whom he proceeded to arrest for DWI. Unfortunately, I don't usually get the "I'm going to be late" calls until he's already on his way. The one time I did get the call, he was on his way to the hospital because his sgt. had just been shot. Unfortunately, he did not make it. So, now I get a little worried when I have not heard from him.
